First Steps

PROVISIONAL LICENCE

Before you can start learning to drive, you must apply for a provisional licence.  You can apply for your provisional licence either online on the DVSA website or in person at your local post office.  To apply online use the link here.

If you are looking to start driving on commencement of your 17th birthday, provisional licences can be applied for three months before – the licence will only be valid, however, when you turn 17.

At your first lesson you will need to produce your driving licence and must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate from 20 metres.  You will also need to do this before your practical driving test.

THEORY TEST

Before you are allowed to take the Practical Driving Test, you will first need to pass the Theory Test.  There are two parts to this test:

  • Answering 50 multiple choice questions in 57 minutes; you need to answer a minimum of 43 correct.

  • The Hazard Perception Test - you get to watch 14 video clips. The clips feature everyday road scenes which contain at least one ‘developing hazard’ and one of the clips features 2 developing hazards.  You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen.  You need a minimum score of 44 out of 75 to pass this test.  To gain your theory certificate you need to pass both parts.  You can book your theory test on the DVSA website using this link.

I can give you help and advice on how to study for and pass your theory test.

PRACTICAL TEST

According to the DVSA, most people have had about 45 hours of professional driving tuition plus 20 hours of private practice before they are ready to pass their practical driving test. This is just an average and everyone learns at a different rate

Clearly, it’s important to get plenty of practice before taking your practical driving test.

To take your test your need the following:

  • your UK driving licence

  • your theory test pass certificate, if you have it

  • a car - most people use their driving instructor’s (it is possible to use your own car as long as it meets the DVSA rules).

I will advise you when I feel you are ready to take your test.

You can book your practical test by clicking on the link here.
